20 Tips to experience the Gold Coast on a Budget!

The Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia offers a vibrant mix of beaches, entertainment, and natural beauty. Exploring the Gold Coast on a budget is definitely do-able with some smart planning! I am lucky enough to live close by to the Goldie (an affectionate name) so I am always on the lookout to make sure I experience any luxury holiday that is on offer!

Here are 20 tips to experience the Gold Coast without overspending and keeping on budget:-

1. Budget accommodation on the Gold Coast

Choose budget-friendly accommodations like hostels, budget hotels, or vacation rentals through sites such as AirBnb. Though don’t shy away from looking at 5 star hotels for deals either! Often they will put out great offers in the off-peak seasons (particularly over the winter months - June, July, August, or just on the shoulder of these months) to entice travellers to stay with them. This has been one way I have been able to stay at luxurious accommodation for amazing prices. (Queensland has quite stable weather throughout the entire year). The winter months on the Coast are still extremely enjoyable.

If a discounted 5 Star Hotel is still out of reach, don’t be shy about visiting one. They will often let you in to look around. Treat yourself to an indulgent meal or day spa instead (if you are not opting to stay).

If I can save $$ somewhere else, I will splurge on something nice.  Lunch treat at the Terraces restaurant Sheraton Mirage - Southport

A great way to save some money for accommodation booking is to book as you would usually with your preferred booking platform (for e.g. I use Booking.com) however, book the accommodation using ShopBack. You still generally get the great prices you do with your choice of platform, however you also get cash back using ShopBack. Who doesn’t want more to spend elsewhere! Yes it is legit, use it all the time. Might take some time to get the cash back through, however it does come through.

Another thought is to consider staying slightly inland or away from the beach for more affordable options. (though I am a believer if you are at the coast, stay near a beach!)

2. Transportation

Use public transportation, such as buses and light rail, to get around. The Gold Coast has a well-connected public transport system.

Consider walking or renting an e-bike/Scooters for short distances. E-bike/scooter options are particularly popular, transiting though Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Southport, so take advantage of getting around more easily. It is such an easy option and fun way to explore. Great to explore from Surfers Paradise up to The Spit at Southport.

3. Free Beach Activities

Enjoy the beautiful beaches for free!! (We have over 10,000 of them across Australia - just sayin’ :) We are so lucky in Australia that access to beaches are free, whereas you may pay for the privilege in Europe (as we have experienced - to be honest, I really can’t fathom having to pay for accessing a beach!!!! especially when I think we are in the lead for the best beaches in the world - yes I am somewhat biased).

Swim, sunbathe, fish or take a leisurely stroll along the coastline. The Gold Coast is well-known for its long stretches of sandy beaches, for as far as the eye can see.

Our beaches are something else - miles of white sandy beaches. Take long strolls and swim in the ocean. Good for the soul.

Surfers Paradise Beach often has free events and live entertainment too, so is a hive of activities there. Broadbeach (Close to Surfers Paradise), is the hub for alfresco dining and home to the Star Casino) They are always offering sneaky mid-week deals over the winter. So you can literally walk from the beach to a great spot for lunch or dinner.

4. Gold Coast Hinterland Exploration

Venture into the Gold Coast hinterland for free or low-cost nature experiences. Who doesn't want glorious nature experiences for free! Explore national parks like Springbrook or Lamington National Park.

Take advantage of walking trails and enjoy the crazy stunning views.

Witches Falls Tamborine

Curtis Falls, Mount Tamborine. Make time to explore the Hinterland. Nature at its best

5. Local Markets

Visit local markets to experience the culture and find affordable eats. Markets offer diverse and budget-friendly food options. They are many markets scattered all along the Coast. A popular market is the Beachfront Surfers Paradise Markets (on every Wed, Friday and Saturday night - 4pm - 9pm). Another favourite of mine is the Carrara Markets - bargains are to be had at these permanent weekend markets. Open Saturdays and Sundays (is free to park) and open between 8am -3pm.

6. BYO (Bring Your Own)

Save money on meals by bringing your own snacks and drinks when possible.

Use communal kitchens in hostels or vacation rentals to prepare simple meals or opt to buy your groceries locally. I must admit, I rarely BYO! However, I do look for GroupOn deals, so that I can minimise costs when dining out. Lots of options, particularly on the coast, as is very competitive. Do a little research to get cheap dining out options.

7. Free Events and Festivals

Check for free events and festivals happening during your visit. The Gold Coast often hosts various cultural events and concerts throughout the year. Be on the lookout for what is happening for your visit. Try to find the balance in your life to find your way to the events.

The Gold Coast is major tourist destination, so always hosting free events for all. Swell Sculpture festival is a must see event. Unique, creative, outdoor sculptures literally adorn the beachfront at Currumbin. A wonderful day out. Another wonderful festival is the Blues on Broadbeach festival. There are too many events and festivals to list here. Check out Destination Gold Coast for events.

Whilst not free, also look for thrills and spills experiences. The Gold Coast is the adrenalin pumping capital of Queensland whether skyjumping, parasailing, Jet skiing, Jet Boating, diving etc. - there are so many experiences to be had. To look for some discounted options, always look at BookMe. Another legit site - have used them many times. My motto is to never pay full price if I can avoid it :)

The Pacific Air Show is truly an amazing spectacle. It does cost to attend on the beach, however you can see it from the water or on the fringe or if you are lucky enough, from your beachfront apartment!

8. Discount Theme Park Tickets

If you're interested in theme parks, look for discounted tickets online or as part of bundled packages. If you are a local resident, the annual passes offer exceptional value (if you plan to go with some regularity, it certainly pays off).

Some parks offer discounts for purchasing tickets in advance. I am not sure this is just me, however after I have been on the most extreme thrill rides…….I feel THE MOST ALIVE! There has to be something in that - Yes??? (or is this just me??)

The thrills of all of the Coast's theme parks are a must visit - Warner Bros Movieworld.

9. BYO Entertainment

Bring your own entertainment for beach days or downtime. A book, a frisbee, or a portable speaker can add to your experience without additional costs. Find your patch on a Gold Coast beach and make it your own!

Everyone seems to make their patch by putting down their Cool Cabanas for Shade in Australia (I seriously need a Cool Cabana!!! edit - I have a Cool Cabana!!) A fantastic item to manage the crazy Australian summer - so wished I had been a part of that business!)

(Pictured at Cotton Tree, at the Sunshine Coast - but gives you an idea of our Cool Cabana Heaven here!

10. Explore Local Cafes

Instead of dining at touristy restaurants, explore local cafes for more affordable meals instead - Consider having breakfast or lunch at cafes, as they often have lower prices than dinner menus. I usually choose a big breakky (included in the accommodation) or lunch options over dining options.

11. BYO Water and Snacks

Stay hydrated by bringing your own water bottle. Refill stations are available in many public areas (and in the theme parks). Carry snacks to avoid impulse purchases when hunger strikes! I have found, wherever you are in the world, that the cost of water (yes H2O) is horrendous, so …..bring a water bottle!!! When I was young, I drank water from the backyard hose tap. Apparently that is not so cool anymore (what the!!), however it did quench one’s thirst without crazy dollars attached! In case you missed the message - yes! Bring your own water bottle :)

12. Take Advantage of Happy Hours

The Gold Coast is all about Happy Hours!! (may have been to a few!- lol!) If you plan to enjoy a drink, look for happy hour specials at bars and restaurants to save on beverage costs. Shall share more on wonderful rooftop bars across the Gold Coast. You will love!

The Gold Coast is tourist central! This makes it highly competitive. Take advantage of the happy hours!

13. Budget-Friendly Tours

Look for budget-friendly tours or activities. Some companies offer discounts for online bookings or during certain times of the day. Always look for costs dependent on the time of day. You would be surprised about the difference in price! If you are using a discount website such as Bookme.com.au then look at the times of the day for the activity and the associated prices. You can snaffle up a bargain by being a little flexible.

14. Free Cultural Experiences

Explore free cultural experiences, like the Gold Coast Arts Centre or HOTA (I so love HOTA!!), which often hosts free exhibitions and events. I love how the Gold Coast Council are forever looking at events that involve the wider community to truly understand what the residents and the greater public want for the Gold Coast. I don’t think I have seen a local mayor get it sooooo RIGHT!!! At the end of the day, it is about how wonderful the experience is and how receptive the community is - yes??!!

Find your way to HOTA at the Gold Coast. Such a wonderful day out. Make sure to dine or have drinks at the rooftop cafe/bar. Is bliss.

15. BYO Beach Gear

Bring your own beach gear, such as towels and umbrellas, to avoid renting them at the beach. If you are an international visitor, you may be surprised to hear that there are no fees or charges attached to access to beaches in Australia. It is not at all like European beach clubs. Australia does not typically charge for these things, nor does it typically provide these luxuries at every beach either (so you aren’t caught out:)

BYO beach gear. We have over 10,000 beaches in Australia - enjoy them. Please remember your 50+ SPF sunscreen!

You generally won’t find these items described for hire, to be close by. Things like surfboards and SUP’s may be available (in select touristy places) We have so many beaches and such vast terrain too, this just doesn't work in Australia, like the limited beach areas in Europe. I think I like it that way :) Hoping it stays that way. Simply just BYO where you can :) or hire/source from your hotel.

16. Visit Free Attractions

Explore free attractions where possible. Some attractions have free entry or offer discounted rates during specific times. Seek out what is on offer. Always lovely to take a hike through one of the national parks. Burleigh National Park is one of the most spectacular walks on the Gold Coast. Make sure to visit here. Two different scenic walks, the ocean side and then back through the rainforest.

There are plenty of free things to do. Discover our National parks (pic - Burleigh National Park)

17. Camping in National Parks

If you enjoy camping, consider staying in national park campsites for a budget-friendly nature experience. I have stayed in lots of places around the world, and would honestly say that Australia has so many amazing nature experiences that you need to explore. You just have to navigate around our wide spaces to keep getting from A to B to explore it ALL!! (And keep within budget, which is essentially the challenge when travelling in Australia, as can be pricey) Absolutely still my goal to do the big lap of Australia - the way I would like to do it though. I have met so many people from overseas who simply don’t understand the wide terrain of Australia. I have seen bloggers who think they can do the LAP of Oz in 6 weeks - Dreamin’! (yes that is sarcasm!). A year or two is more the reality. You could cross 5 European countries in 16 hours, yet you would be still driving the length of Queensland in that time! It’s a big state and a big country :)

18. Utilise Public BBQs

Take advantage of public barbecue areas in parks and beaches for a budget-friendly outdoor meal. Barbeques are a popular pastime in Australia. We are outdoor lovers and also love cooking on the Barbie! Is wonderful seeing a family seizing the moment with kids running crazily everywhere during the day and mums/dads cooking up a storm, ready to feed the family after a huge day of playing and fun in the sun. Reminds me a lot of my yesteryear! This has to be my favourite memory of my childhood. I don’t think you can underestimate the value of being outdoors associated with family.

Most parks have access to Barbecues and a range of activities close by. Volleyball at the ready for you at the Broadwater

19. Student and Youth Discounts

If you're a student or young traveller, enquire about student and youth discounts for various activities and attractions. Keep costs down wherever you can. Always ask if there is a discount. It can’t hurt! I am way on the other side of youth and always ask for an older person’s :) discount. Recently just did this for a cruise and quote came in cheaper! Simply ask.

20. Local Public Events

Attend local public events, community gatherings, or live music performances for free or at a minimal cost.

With a bit of planning, you can make the most of your visit to the Gold Coast on a budget. You can still enjoy a 5 star experience without the 5 star spend :)

Enjoy your travels at the Gold Coast and Gold Coast Hinterland!

Leave a comment, especially if you know how to stretch the dollar for more luxury experiences.

Cheers
