13 Reasons why every Millennial needs to travel!
Is it to have sex with a stranger on a beach in Mexico?
Is it for the choice $%@*! in Croatia?
Is it to get ‘lit’ in every capital city of the world?
Is that it?!
According to millennials I have been chatting with, then yes, that’s it.
Is that what YOU think? Pease share this post with other millennials - we want to hear your candid thoughts!
Let’s chat about the 13 reasons why every Millennial needs to travel.
Interesting to be told these are important and fuelling the desire to travel. Let’s chat first though to a well-travelled millennial, who has already been trekking the globe and transformed from her millennial travel experiences.
Immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the world!
Who better to ask than my niece! A brown eyed, bronzed , 24 year old Aussie beauty with bleach blonde hair - a globe trotter with a fierce sense of adventure and living life to its absolute fullest at home or abroad.
Check out what her thoughts are as to the ‘Top 13 reasons why every Millennial needs to travel’…..
1. To learn about ‘you’
Travelling to a new country or place can sometimes feel scary and confusing but equally fun and exciting. The best thing is you learn to push yourself, making new friends, socialising with new people and in doing this, you learn a lot about who you are. You recognise your own strengths and learn different skills from the diverse cultures and people you meet. At times there will be negative situations that arise but travel becomes your best teacher, to help you to adapt and fast track your personal growth. This helps you to become more connected, as you are putting yourself in different situations and dealing with different people constantly. These experiences simply help you grow as a person.
2. Money, Money, Money!
Travel teaches you how to be wiser with your money. Planning and researching is important particularly if making a move to another country. Living and working in another country and trying to save was extremely hard. Minimum wage in Canada averaged $10 - $14 an hour, so goal was to get a job paying tips. Thus mainly hospitality work. Living in ski towns also allowed a great opportunity to work for the ski fields as a lot of them gave free or discounted ski passes and also cheap staff accommodation. If working overseas, shared housing is your cheapest option. If just travelling through, hostels are not only cheap, but you meet a lot of cool, like-minded people which can open up a world of possibilities for you - Trust Me! You go on incredible adventures you never even thought of because you’re now hanging out with people you never even knew existed!
If you want to travel - simply make it happen!
3. To Tick off the Bucket List Early! - Setting Goals
Spontaneous travel is a great way to travel - my favourite. Never say no to any adventure. Resist setting expectations about anything and 90% of the time you will never be disappointed. I feel like a free spirit and like to ‘go with the wind’. By saying yes, a lot more opportunities have come my way and been to places that weren’t even on my bucket list!
Explore as much as you can!
For a big move like living and working overseas - do plan and research. I gave myself 6 months to plan and had a vision for all the things I wanted to add to my bucket list. I SAVED all my dollars and cents as I knew I was saving for something bigger and better. Once I moved overseas, I seized the moment for any travel opportunity and as they came up - I just said ‘Yes!’.
Sometimes it is good to be a ‘Yes’ person!
4. To get a fresh perspective
Travel has CHANGED ME- in a way that I cannot even begin to describe. I have seen and experienced some of the most beautiful and magical landscapes/scenery whilst also meeting some fascinating and thrilling people.

I want more from life, to keep exploring new places, to experience new adventures and meet new people, to immerse myself in different cultures. Travel just gives me this feeling that I belong to the world. I belong to all the places I’ve been and I belong to all the people I’ve met. Travel makes me feel happy and joyous because it’s exciting. I am consistently pushed outside of my comfort zone and that helps me to grow.
My motto for travel life is “Leave no regrets and make the most of the moments”. It is such a rewarding experience, as I learn a lot, but also teach without even knowing it. I know I am a better person because of travel and eternally grateful for it.
My Travel Life Motto - “Leave no regrets and make the most of the moments”.
5. Learn to appreciate others more
The advice I was given before I ventured abroad was to “trust no-one”, which in hindsight felt was the stupidest advice I have ever been given. Not everyone wants the best for you - that’s true, so is important to trust your instincts. However the majority of people you meet are like-minded and understanding. A majority of people want to help in anyway they can. People don’t want to see you struggle, so remember to be kind and always give a helping hand because when you need the favour returned, Karma is always right there to help. I lost my phone and wallet on 9 separate occasions (no joke!) and got it back every single time! No missing money or anything! The more you travel the more you realise how great humans actually are.
6. Problem Solving
Travelling for me is one of the best things in life, but that doesn’t mean that it is always sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. If things don’t go the way you planned, just make it work. Approach problems with a clear mind. If you are frantically freaking out that it is the end of the world because you booked your hotel for the wrong night for a stop over in NYC and everywhere is booked at 3am (yes I did this!), you are not going to think clearly if you are upset or angry. Things happen; life happens and curveballs are thrown to keep you on your toes. So just breathe! There are always solutions or options. In my case, headed back to the airport terminal for a ‘comfy’ sleep. (hey, at least I was sleeping!)
It isn’t always sunshine, rainbows and lollipops! - although there is sunshine, rainbows and lollipops!
7. Build Patience
There are always variables when you travel. You need to build patience otherwise you will just end up getting frustrated and overwhelmed. My mum is fantastic, an easygoing, relaxed person, however whilst travelling together we had an incident whereby we missed our bus to Vancouver, which was beyond our control. Straight away, mum started to freak out. I knew we weren’t stuck - we had options. I got out my phone and a quick search of a variety of transportation, came up with another bus service departing in just another hour. Yes - an extra cost of $150, however back on track for our adventure. My advice - stay open-minded and be patient with yourself and others. It makes it so much easier in the long run and things always have a way of working out the way they are meant to.
8. To Help Others
Travellers need to help travellers because we are all in this together. I honestly cannot stress this enough. Lend a helping hand or give some advice as Karma isn’t just a bitch, she’s a good bitch. Be helpful, be kind and understanding because when the tables turn (and they will!), you are going to want the same support returned. I get what I give and that is something I live by. This just makes the world a better place for everyone.
9. To Really Appreciate Life
The more I get to see and experience just makes my love for the world grow and grow. It keeps making me want to explore and experience every inch of what this beautiful world has to offer. Some places are luxurious, some bring you quickly back to reality and puts your whole life into perspective. I am grateful for that. You begin to appreciate every little thing in your life when you start travelling. Whether it be the moments in time with friends, or family. A proper working shower after 2 weeks of camping on the road and living in a van. Taking in every single moment you get to encounter and realising just how lucky you actually are to be living the life you want to live.

10. Embracing Spontaneity
Spontaneity is my favourite part of travel and of course, I am a “YES” person! Living in a ski town in minus 20 degrees celsius most days was a lot of fun, but obviously cold! (and I am a 100% beach baby) so when friends suggested a week in the sun, we worked out the budget - cheap! and then found a deal in Cuba. So off we went and turned out to be one of my TOP 5 FAVOURITE COUNTRIES visited. All by simply by saying ‘YES’ and embracing spontaneity.

11. To Learn
Every day you are travelling you are learning about yourself, about others, different cultures and history. This helps to feed your mind, body and soul. Every person you meet and every place you travel has something to teach you. Travel is honestly the best teacher I have ever had. My life experiences have been enriched and the way I handle and deal with situations is so much different now that I have had travel experience.
12. Discovery
Getting lost in a new or foreign place is one of the most rewarding experiences. Wandering around a new city not knowing what to expect on each corner gives me a great sense of adventure. Being open minded when you travel is a huge advantage (trust me; it is the best way to be!). It allows you to discover things you didn’t know even existed and 9 times out of 10, you always have a good time. So be open, take on every opportunity that comes your way and remember to always be the type of traveller the world needs - helpful and spontaneous, because it will always benefit you in the long run.
13. Push the Boundaries!
How can you know what something is like unless your try it? By trying new things and pushing your limits you can discover so many things you might actually enjoy. Stepping outside your comfort zone opens up a world of possibilities and you might even surprise yourself. Never did I think I would be able to live in a 2 bedroom unit with 6 people (yes housing crisis in a ski town is a real thing), it was just something I had to do. It turned out to be the most incredible time of my life and I even have the co-ordinates to the house as a tattoo to prove it. I pushed my boundaries of what was considered “comfortable living” and made it work as best as I could…one of the best choices I have made in my life.
Push the boundaries - you change, grow and adapt as a person. That is the biggest benefit that travels gives you.
Once a traveller, always a traveller! When you have started on this path, it’s hard to stop.
Keep DISCOVERING the world and keep discovering YOURSELF.
Enrich your life with the greatness of the world and you won’t be disappointed.
There you have it - Some millennial insights as to why every Millennial needs to travel! Thank you to my gorgeous niece, for sharing her thoughts. Millennials have definitely altered the path for the future of travel. It is expected that within 5 years, young people will have travelled to at least 14 countries by the time that they reach 25 years of age!!
Millennial thinking has made that possible.
Their thirst for adventure has seen the introduction of ride-sharing, AirBnb, more competitive pricing for hotels, hostels, cruising etc. Thanks to the millennial mindset, travel is now more accessible and more affordable than ever before for EVERYONE. This opens up so much possibility for all to experience the pleasure that travel can bring.
